A F R A I D

I'm afraid of vinegar.
Sometimes cows.
Horses that want to buck me off.

I'm scared of sharing a bathroom,
of never finishing that painting.
The Joker.
And I get nervous talking about blood.

I'm not afraid of people,
but I fear the thoughts behind their skulls.
For 10 years I was convinced that vampires existed.
Sometimes I still think they do.

I'm not afraid of snakes,
I'm afraid of my children being bitten by them.
I'm afraid of my children being bitten by the snakes that don't pry in the desert.
The invisible snakes with the venom that only poisons your soul.

I'm not afraid of the dark,

I'm afraid of the darkness.

I fear I'll never find the perfect temperature for sleeping.

I'm afraid of wedding rings and the Internet,
and alligators and Ukraine.

I'm afraid for your disease and I'm terrorized by mine.

I'm afraid of myself because I'm capable of making you afraid.

And I'm afraid of you because you're dangerous.
You're dangerous because we're dangerous.
We're dangerous because I love you.
